Panama
Music & Screenworks was formed pretty much out of
necessity. Two good friends decided to produce a record
the other had dreamed up of songs of The Beatles recorded
by musicians in Cuba. The one knew less than the other
about the music business, but the former was sold instantly
on the idea and the potentials of the project, so he
put up the money so the other could go to Havana and
produce his brainchild. The record was produced, and
it was excellent, a musical gem.
Confident
of the uniqueness of their CD, the two were hopeful
they’d find a label that would market their wonderful
production to the world. With that they’d be free
to record a second CD they'd thought of while the first
was being made.
It
wouldn't be that easy, as they came to find out. Doors,
BIG label doors, were knocked on for almost a year.
A good number of executives liked the record, particularly
it’s unusual and attractive concept, but…well,
you know how it goes, the doors opened just a bit and
then...nothing. At one point, the partners accidentally
discovered that their record's idea was about to be
hijacked by one of the big label execs that had promissed
to seriously pitch the CD to his seniors. That compelled
them to release the record under their own label and
kill any chance of an outright ripoff of the concept.

Releasing
the label on their own turned out to be a more serious
undertaking than they had imagined. But then, that’s
another story. Thing is, that’s how Panama Music
& Screenworks and our label PMS came to be. Put
hastily together on a slim shoestring budget to get
the record, OUR record, off the ground and out in the
world. Our firstborn, facing gigantically uncertain
times, particularly for the music industry which finds
itself today in the throes of convulsive pains and radically
transformative change.
It’s
been more than a year now since we released our CD and
we’re proud to say that Here comes...el Son has
been steadily making quite a name for itself. That’s
helped PM&S along too. We’re poised to release
our second record, and a third—a sequel to the
first—is pretty much in the pipeline. We’re
still underfinanced, but we’re managing to keep
above water just fine. So it goes for labors of love.
Please
browse around our site and find out more about who we
are and why Here comes...el Son is such a unique record.
We’re very grateful that you’ve come by
to visit. Bienvenido y pase adelante.
